Dvorak vs. MySQL
I'm pretty sure you've heard the news about Sun buying MySQL and by and large the response from the community has been quite positive, both of the companies have a lot to gain from this and MySQL can make some serious inroads against Oracle-like bloatware littering the RDBMS market. Of course as with any piece of news there is always someone who will always beg to differ and will try to put a "controversial" spin in this. It looks like the infamous John Dvorak is offering his pearls of "wisdom" on this deal here. Well, it looks like the same Personal-Computer-minded asshole that made predictions in the past that a mouse is a useless invention for desktop computer is offering his gems on how the future of MySQL will unfold under control of Sun. And instead of offering a somewhat coherent view on the deal, Dvorak is suggesting a conspiracy theory of sort that in fact it is Oracle that is pulling at the strings attached to Sun and is trying to kill MySQL by proxy. What a laugh! First off, newsflash - Sun and Oracle are no longer buddy-buddy they used to be. Oracle stabbed Sun in the back long time ago when they started cutting deals with HP and god forbid IBM that still makes Sun multicore gear appear less competitive when you put the exorbitant Oracle licensing on top. I think Sun is at the stage when they are happy to "partner" with Oracle, but otherwise Sun would be more than happy to eat Oracle's lunch (at least on the low end). MySQL is a dagger in Sun's hands to carve at Oracle and other bloated and overpriced database products littering the RDBMS market. I would be more than happy to see Oracle/IBM/Microsoft being seriously hurt and at last start thinking about being *reasonable* selling their products. Way to go Sun and MySQL, I really hope you succeed at getting the market share your deserve. And oh yeah, note to Dvorak, stick to reviewing PC's in PC Magazine, you arrogant ass.
